If skate or die is the question then death is the only answer for the Pro Skater franchise. Tony Hawks Pro Skater 5 is a skateboarding video game in the Tony Hawks series of skateboarding games. With its release set for the end of September on Xbox One and PS4, this.

Perhaps its most broken elements can be fixed in time, and Activision are actually talking about free DLC, but at the moment it all seems completely unsalvageable. New screenshots of Tony Hawks Pro Skater 5 recently emerged showing a new visual style that looked almost like cel-shading.

There’s no hiding what a terrible, cynical, waste of money this is, or what an insult it is to the earlier games and indeed the man himself. Up until a couple of months ago they were just normal textures but they were quietly changed to a cel-shaded style at the last minute, to try and hide the damage. The online features, which are supposed to fill the level with other players, are just as bad and so ruinous to the already wonky frame rate and load times it’s only worth playing offline.Īnd of course there’s the graphics, which as you can see are awful. The glitches are so extreme we’re almost tempted to imagine Activsion did them on purpose, just to encourage YouTube videos, but since nothing else works either that’s probably giving them too much credit. It’s a genuine mystery why unwanted features like that were prioritised above, you know… the game working. For example, some levels have power-ups that do things like give you powers like Iceman out of X-Men or turn you into a giant. Since its been over a decade since the seriess fourth entry, the sights might have been aimed a bit higher. The Tony Hawk’s games were never simulators but the slam is just one of a series of features that see Pro Skater 5 push much further into arcade territory than usual. Overall, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 5 is a decent installment in a long-running series, but this reboot is perhaps a bit too authentic in that it lives up to its predecessors, but fails to exceed them.

You can immediately imagine what happens as a result, which is all the more frustrating because a slam is specifically designed to end a combo instead of continuing it. There’s a new slam move, for example, which apart from looking stupid, and clearly being physically impossible, is mapped to the same button as grind. But at every stage the game seems desperate to ensure you enjoy none of it.

You can get used to it, and if the game doesn’t freak out with one of its infinite array of graphical glitches it is possible to chain together grinds, manuals, and other tricks in the old manner. The stages aren’t especially inspired this time round, but the more immediate problem is the completely un-customisable controls, which seem to go out of their way to make everything as unintuitive as possible.

It will be available for PS4 on September 29th, 2015 for 59.99. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 is being developed by my company Robomodo, along with Disruptive Games. One thing that developer Robomodo has got right are the size of the levels, which back in the days of the original PlayStation were one of the best examples of freeform, open world level design. Check online for pre-order exclusives from your favorite retailers and of course PlayStation Store, where PS4 pre-order is now available.
